1781 – Battle of Pensacola ends; Battle of Fort Motte begins (American Revolutionary War) 

1846 – Battle of Palo Alto (Mexican-American War) 

1862 – Battle of McDowell, VA (Also Bull Pasture Mountain) (US Civil War) 

1864 – Battle of Spotsylvania Court House begins (US Civil War)

 A Confederate redoubt guarding Taylor's Bridge; 

captured by Union troops of Hancock's Corps May 23 1864.

  

1915 – Second Battle of Krithia ends; Battle of Frezenberg (WWI) 

1942 – Battle of the Coral Sea ends (Naval); Battle of the Philippines ends (WWII) 

1945 – Battle of the Atlantic ends (Naval); VE Day, Official German surrender; some German units continue fighting (WWII) 

2005 – Operation Matador begins (Iraq War)

 8 May 2005 - Al Ubaydi, Iraq - The bridge that spans the Euphrates River is under construction by the engineers in the United States Army during operation Matador.
